How to Rent a Public Cabin in Southcentral Alaska: Access and Adventures for Hikers, Kayakers, Anglers, and More (How To-- (Berkeley, Calif.).)

Alaska's secret treasure revealed!
This is such a helpful book, I'm almost sorry it was written! This is *the* definitive guide to renting public cabins in southcentral Alaska. As an Alaskan who appreciates the availability of inexpensive cabins -- especially when B&Bs and hotels are $... nightly -- I must say I hope too many travelers don't catch on. Excellent and informative.

An indispensable, practical guidebook reference.
Andromeda Romano-Lax's How To Rent A Public Cabin In Southcentral Alaska is recommended for the rugged wilderness traveler: it tells hikers, kayakers, anglers and more how to locate and rent such cabins for very little money. While often bare-bones and lacking amenities, these cabins provide shelter and portals to the wilderness.

Perfect guide to the "Alaskan's secret"
Few people who live outside of Alaska know about Alaska's wonderful public use cabins available for rent. This book explains how to enjoy some of the best Alaska has to offer (very inexpensively, by the way). A great resource for vacationing in Alaska.

Thanks Bro
Unknown to me, until recently, my brother wrote the first review. He's not from Bern, his last name's not Heinrich, and my book has almost 300 rock climbing routes near Anchorage. It's relatively cheap, packed with info, the locals seem to like it, and it's the only book available for this area.

WOW! Extreme detail and awesome sites!
This book is the ultimate rock-climbing guide. With over 30 high quality routes detailed exquisitely, there is no substitute. Multiple routes on the Seward Highway make for fast, fun, easily acessible climbing in Southcentral Alaska. A MUST BUY!!

The only decent trail guide for VI
The hardest thing about Vancouver Island, besides learning how to pronounce the place names, is finding your way around it and finding the trails. VI is not covered by the reams of guidebooks, as are the Northwest US states. Get the three-book series to cover all of VI.

Southcentral Alaska: Including Anchorage, Kenai Peninsula, Susitna Valley and Prince William Sound (Umbrella Guides)
Published in Paperback by Epicenter Press (March, 1995)
Author: Scott McMurren

An insiders guide, but a bit old
I bought this book as it appeared to be the only guide that focused solely on general travel in the Southcentral region of Alaska. I didn't need information on Kotzebue or Nome or even Denali, so I thought this specialized guide would be better.

The main strength of this book comes from Mr. McMurren's intimate familiarity with the area. This is shown in his very precise driving directions and little details like the names of the owners of various restaurants and hotels. But his familiarity may have caused him to leave out two things important to travelers: many location-specific items, and general Alaska travel info. These location-specific items would include suitability for children and the disabled, opening and closing dates/times, prices, availability of food, etc. A chapter on general info for any traveler to Alaska could have included best (and worst) dates to travel to the area, climate, general costs, general availability of hotels, a calendar of regional festivals, etc. Sure I could get this from the Internet, but I'd rather have it all in one place that I can carry with me.

And speaking of the Internet, this book was last updated in 1995, so some of the information is out-of-date. There are no web sites or e-mail addresses listed for any of the businesses, agencies, or traveler's bureaus.

Although a handy specialized guide to Southcentral Alaska, I'd recommend supplementing it with another, more up-to-date guide book, even if that one has a lot of info on parts of Alaska you don't plan to visit.

Buyer Beware- You Can't Print Ebooks
This was my first and last order for an Ebook. First, it took 20 hours to receive the link to download the ebook. Moving on to the awful Microsoft reader software; the digital rights management thinking is along the lines of the music industry- too restrictive to be useful. It won't even allow printing; something I was looking forward to with a book about hiking in Alaska.

Chalk this up to my experience- I ordered the printed version.
